Liquid Crystals can be arranged in any shape, but for the purpose of projectors, they form arrays that block light from the lamp. It's the same basic technology used in digital wrist watches or alarm clocks with the difference that the liquid crystals are visible in those devices. The projector technology that uses LCD chips is now marketed as 3LCD.
